Dont think they sell
They don't have halal sign. But the nasi lemak is from Malay friend. Karipap from Chinese friend. The bread purchase from sings.
Yes
Can you question me in English?
Opening hour starts from 8am, not open on sunday
People come here for the old school taste , yes ,nothing special but not done everyone does it anymore
Super duper bad service. Had been seated for 15 minutes amd raised hand wanted to make order but got ignored by the staff even already called them for many times. They just keep served the people who were later than me. If can choose the rate, it's no star from me. Better don't go to such terrible service place fpr meal. Spoilt mood and appetite
Delicious charcoal toasted bread, coffee ☕, half Boiled Egg
It really is a good place for a true Malaysian breakfast. However, service is slow and the guy who takes the orders is a bit arrogant. So just go there, grab a seat and just wait for him to come to your table. May be 10 minutes before he even notices you. When you try to get his attention, he will ask you to wait. So you need to be patient and occupy their seat a little longer. Other than that, everything is good here. Coffee is splendid. Nasi lemak is spicy and flavourful. Eggs and toasts are perfect.
Terrible roti bakar set and subpar coffee
Good crispy toast! Went right before opening and fortunately there was no queue for seats but had to wait a good 15-20mins for our toast to arrive. Will come again if the wait is not too long.
I took breakfast here simply because of the crowd. Looks like mostly regulars.
Traditional local coffee shop that server local coffee, half boiled egg with toast, kaya, nasi lemak and curry puff.
all the way from canada, would definitely visit this authentic Asian chinese kopitiam in penang. Toast butter kaya bread with dippings of half boiled was the highlight of the dish. Dont forget to order the famous Kopi O Peng freshly made by the owner.
They serve authentic Hainanese coffee. Recommend to take hot coffee, it is an aromatic well balanced coffee. Yumm
The Milo here taste so so...But the half boils egg is recommended 👍🏻The bread also quite nice
Great coffee, half boiled eggs and steamed bread😋you got to withstand the heat a bit as there will be many patrons😉
Staffs were rude and very bad service. Took time to take orders and wasn’t very welcoming. Coffee was just okay, just like normal kopitiam coffee, very ordinary. Had Egg toast but the yolks were not runny too. Not worth the wait, very touristy.
Classic spot in the city for eggs on toast. Simple, fast, efficient and cheap. We had lemon iced tea also and it was good. Enjoy
Friendly staff, good food and atmosphere
Best local coffee and charcoal toasted bread with butter and kaya in Penang. Prices is simply very reasonable. For me I took 2 cups of black coffee on my every visit. Yummy !
Good place for a sip of coffee and toasted bread but you can find this type of coffeeshop with similar quality anywhere in the island. Overswarm by tourist and not worth for a queue.
this place is nothing but touristy. queue for table is expected at all time. not to say the best toasts or coffee, in fact some of the toasts didn't even come through that famed wood fire 'toaster' sitting at one corner on the floor. electric toasters were used instead! you can give this place a miss if you're not into queuing for breakfast.
Really good kopi peng! Roti bakar has charcoal taste but is pretty standard. Good to sit here and inhale the nice coffee aroma..
Great place for coffee, toast/steam bread and half boiled eggs
Authentic Asian breakfast was worth the wait. A traditional gem in an alley that is easy to be missed. Mixed of tourists and locals having a great start to the day. Coffee was thick and fragrant, kaya butter toast complemented well.
It was an experience. Staff spoke 0 English and menus where mostly in Chinese, BUT it was an delicious and cheap breakfast. I'll come back with friends again before leaving George town for sure.
Surprisingly bread and the egg taste so damn well! Recommended to try their Cham ice. Attached menu for reference.
Good for experience. We queued and waited for 1hr before our food came on a Public Holiday. Walked past the shop the next day (a working weekday) and there were seats without any wait.
There is nothing special about the taste, it is usually recommended not to waste time, you can try other Penang food
Always full, serve regular chinese Malay breakfast
Now a tourist icon; so expect to be jostled by not so friendly tourists who don’t want to wait. Increased demand means toasters are used rather than charcoal flame for the roti Bakar; Avoid Friday’s & Saturday’s ... try early in the week or late morning for some peace & quiet
Poached eggs on toast, jam on toast, coffee any way u like it, and pocket rice (which we didnt have) and cant remember the name of. Personally I wouldnt go for the massive lineup that is sometimes here but wife loved it. Good western style food if you're over eating Asian style food or want a break. Says open at 830am but we got there at 825 and was already full steam. No queue though.
Coffee with 2 type of milk is fantastic. ( remember to less less sweet )
Long waiting time, toast and coffee is below average, overall no wow factor. Not worth the waiting.
Interesting and authentic breakfast with egg and bread eaten in a unique way! Quite popular so expect a wait.
Delicious toast set (especially the Egg On Toast) and friendly staff. 😋
Came here on Monday about 9AM, it wasn’t that crowded but still had to queue. Sadly, there is nothing special about this place, totally overrated. The food is tasteless, not much choice, limited staff, rude, no queue system. To those reading this, I say don’t waste your time coming. To the owner, u better start looking at your way of doing business. Knowing your client is mostly tourist, I take your awful service as a disgrace to Malaysia.
Fast service, cheap and delicious! Very traditional and if you want to eat like the locals this is a good option!
Rude owner. Do not go as you will scolding for nothing. Also most important food and drink is 100% over rated. Will not go again even it is free of charge! Not worth the wait.
Long que, rude staff that forgets your order, squeezing with many other patrons in a humid narrow alley, why do so many people come for this ? Some strange reason, the toast that is toated by charcoal just simply tastes better. The eggs are perfectly poached as well. You need to accept the following conditions before you attempt to eat here.
Years ago it was already busy, but one just wandered in and stood waiting for a table to become free. Was surprised to see that there is now a (long) queue! And they call the numbers of people that they can squeeze at a table. As many things in George Town, the place gets over-touristy. Don't know how many locals still visit. As to the menu: the thick toast is still made under an open fire. But the kaya is not overly spread in between. We also tried the egg on toast. For me it's basically the vibe more than the food. And with the long queues I might not easily return. They have a place in Bishop Street.
The kopi C over here is the best! Nasi lemak is also good too, i love the spiciness. However, I don’t really like the bread, which is over-rated.
I would say this place is your typical breakfast orientated cafe in Penang, serving your customary Kaya toasts, teh tarik, et al. The toast is crusty but soft, add some egg for some more flavour. You can also self serve with the nasi lemak and the curry puff towards the middle of the store.
Opening hours 8am-330pm, close on Sunday.Enjoy!
With all the hype and reviews that I have read in the weeks coming to Penang, I knew that I had to check it out to see if it was true. We went in the middle of the day just for afternoon tea and it was quite tasty! I think that the sense of nostalgia and tradition added to the experience. The roti bakar was light and crispy being finished in the charcoal oven and coffee was rich and flavourul. Not the best we have ever had...but tasty none the less.
A great place for breakfast!!! Its an old traditional cafe, operates in a small alley, using charcoal for toasting of bread. The coffee - very strong and aromatic. It is famed for its half boiled eggs, toasted bread with butter and kaya (egg and coconut milk jam). Very affordable/reasonable pricing and frequented by the locals too.The only downside is the long queue!!!November 2019..Brought friends to this famed Toh Soon Cafe again....for the coffee!!!
Kopi kau.Good place and fast service
The quality of food and drink is very ordinary. Same type of quality can be found in any coffee shop in Penang. Service staff is slow and unfriendly. Waiting time is slow and they have high tendency of skipping your order. Totally not recommended unless you want an unpleasant experience like I did. Never ever coming back.
The taste of the foods were up to expectation. However, it was not worth to spend the time for the foods. The waiting time was about an hour for 2 iced coffee and 2 toasted bread. The soft boiled eggs were delayed still ...
Great place! An iconic coffee shop in Penang. Very good authentic coffee! You can also try the breakfast
Was recommended by our grab driver here. Heard everyone says it’s nice but coffee and bread was a disappointment. Staff were rude, approached the counter and was ignored. Sat there for 10min waiting for someone to take our order and waited again for another 10min for our order to be served. Total time spent for bread and coffee, 30min! If you need a quick fix, give this a miss. You need to cater time to get your seats too!
3 stars for the excellent coffee but the food was nothing special by any means. Very much a tourist location, be warned.
It’s a clean and good coffee shop like usually in Penang
One of the places I’d definitely visit every time I’m back in Penang. Just look for empty seats when you arrive at the place. No need to wait to be served. Locals there are used to sharing tables as well so don’t fret! People usually order the standard toasted bread with half boiled eggs. Be sure to try out their Nasi Lemak too; they are really good. If you’re driving over there, there is a parking lot right behind (opposite entrance) - RM2 for first hour.
Everyone tells me how great the coffee is here but I didn’t find anything special about it nor found it good. The toast and eggs was interesting but wasn’t worth the struggle to find a seat nor the wait also. Save your self the trouble and find a cafe you can sit and enjoy without the crowd waiting for u to finish your cup and toast.
